Super Perils of Baking Review

Review by Wayne McCarthy

Super Perils of Baking invokes a simpler time in gaming. A modern take on a classic 2D side scrolling platformer in the lineage of Super Mario Brothers, Castlevania and Metroid. With a modern art style that grabs your visual attention and hooks you in to this heartfelt modern retro time warp to a simpler time. When we use to gather around the TV and take turns trying to beat levels in our favorite NES and SNES games.

SPoB has all the makings of a indie darling. Developed by Lillymo Games it is a remake of their first game. In a world of remakes this one is a refreshing good use of the now industry wide remake trope. Remaking a game so that it can now get into more hands then when originally launched is a good use of the time of a team.

The simplistic retro style story is a breath of fresh air. Many games from the heyday of the side scroller had overly simplistic stories if they had stories at all. SPoB has a story in it that can be seen as almost a kids story. Something that parents can play with their kids like story time. The story of the 2 baking Brothers is a throw back to simple stories with deeper meanings meant to teach life lessons. With an art style that will appeal to kids and adults alike.

I will admit I have never been any good at side scrollers or platformers but I found myself engaged enough to keep trying levels instead of just giving up. For the more hardcore gamers out there SPoB has a breath of secrets and unlockables. Also the very rare two trophy list one for PS4 and a different one for PS5. With the PS4 being easier to get the platinum then the PS5. Its these small details that shows that the creators of this game truly love what they are doing and understand how to appeal to a broad audience and deliver something for everyone.
